Alternative School Programs
The Alternative School Program is designed to serve students who are at risk of dropping out due to academic deficiencies, lack of credits, emotional adjustments, attendance problems, or other reasons. The Ponca City Alternative Program offers three different educational programs including the SHARE, Wildcat Academy and Teen Pep programs, each serving a different group of at-risk students.
The philosophy of the Alternative Program is that each student is individual and unique and has to be treated that way when it comes to their learning. Instruction is individualized yet rigorous and based on state standards. A graduation plan is developed for each student and reviewed each semester to make sure students are on track to graduate. In addition to traditional curriculum, students are provided counseling, guidance and life skill courses.
The SHARE program, located at Pioneer Technology Center, serves students who have strong vocational interest and have been classified as dropout risks. All academic subjects are provided using a combination of online technology and classroom instruction. Elective courses are also offered. Click HERE for the SHARE Brochure.
Ponca City Public Schools also offers Virtual High School which is available to any student, grades (9-12), who reside in the Ponca City School District and is current with credits. The program must be deemed “Educationally Appropriate” for the individual. This will be determined by the VHS committee consisting of the Administrator, Counselor, and Teacher Advisor. WildCat Academy Program
Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, the district will be sponsoring a new Wildcat Academy alternative program. Located at 818 E Poplar, this program is intended to provide new opportunities for students in grades 9 through 12 who need a different environment than the regular high school setting.
The Wildcat Academy program will have teacher-led curriculum along with online work that allows students to progress at their own pace. Students will be able to participate in school activities such as prom, sports, extracurricular activities, etc. They may also choose to attend classes at Pioneer Technology Center and/or concurrent enrollment at the University Center. In addition to the regular curriculum, they will also be teaching life skills, mentoring and inviting many successful community members to share their experience with students.
Wildcat Academy will serve 60 students, and all students must go through the interview process to be accepted. Classes will run from 8:00 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. Karla Streeter is the director, and the program is staffed with Ponca City Public School highly qualified teachers. Students graduating from the Wildcat Academy program will receive a Ponca City High School Diploma and attend the graduation ceremonies.
